  • The name of Benissa dates from before the expulsion of the Muslims in 1609. The Arabic name (Banu-Issa) means "son of Issas." Even now many of the streets of Benissa still maintain Arabic names. Moriscos came from the Pyrenees, Catalonia and Aragon.You can find the town hall in the Portal Square.The building was built in 1790 as a hospital, but in 1981 the building was fully restored and reopened as the town hall of the city.
